Winter 2023/24 Capsule Review

This is a photo heavy review of my Winter 2024 Capsule.  This season I bought a new cool red coat, bordering on red violet — I have had so much fun with it. I also purchased a pair of faux leather jeans and a lilac pink duster cardigan.

I experimented with black for the first time in years after being told I couldn’t wear it anymore. But I like dark moody colors so I thought I would give it a try again. Let me know what you think, if black is too dark for me or if I’ve made it work with the light additions.

Photos 1 through 5 are my planned capsule pages which I enjoy putting together but I never follow it exactly. I keep doing capsules because I like to have a focused color palette for shopping and I’m looking for clues to why I wear some things and not others, what works and what doesn’t and generally I like doing the geeky analysis.  Plus it’s like playing with virtual paper dolls. I did 3 sub-capsules: casual for daily stuff, date casual, and athleisure although they do cross over into each other with some items. I made sure I had outerwear that worked well with most everything.

Photos 6 through 22 are some favorite outfits.
Photo 11 is my version of gothic romance with a Devore blouse, purple velvet coat and a velvet bag.  Velvet overload!
Photo 16 is what I wore at home on New Year’s Eve: wrap top, faux leather jeans, pewter boots and faux fur collar.

Overall it’s worked very well and I plan on wearing these outfits through February. We’ve had such weird weather in North Carolina! Below 20 some days then 65 to 70.  I’m ready for Spring!

Navy with interest

It’s interesting to look at my clothes with specific categories like this because I’m noticing all my navy items have some interesting feature to make the color less classic: paisley, lace trim, duster length, velvet, tulle, balloon and bell sleeves, asymmetry, distressing, moto jacket style “light navy” trousers.

The only item I don’t wear much is my navy bag.  Maybe it’s too classic or I don’t like wearing it with other navy pieces?  Maybe I need to wear it in an unexpected way with lilac, lavender or aqua.

Assessing a Statement Floral Bag

Inspired by Janet I’ve been wanting a statement bag with some subtle drama to uplift my athleisure outfits because I often feel to yang/masculine in them, so I’ve ordered this backpack bag.  Adding some flare yoga pants and flowy wrap cardigans will help with the femininity too.

The first thing I did was see if I could put together accessory and shoe bundles with it and knew my hiking sneakers were perfect with it along with simple pink and black earrings and a hat for cold weather.   I’m set for camping, hiking, working out etc.  Lots of color potential with this bag: black, white, red, pink, purples, lilac and lavender.

Second, I put together some bundles for casual summer and autumn/winter/spring and tried them out with a few more smart casual outfits.  I can see a I have a gap and could use some black sandals.  I think this bag will be super versatile for me for 4 seasons!

White Boucle Moto Jacket Worn a Few Ways

I’ve been wearing my white boucle moto style jacket to few different events this Spring. It has some black flecks in the nubby weave.

The first pic is what I wore to a friend’s birthday dinner at a Turkish restaurant last night, Third one is to meet with my art journaling group and the last one I’m not sure when I wore it! I don’t think this jacket looks to matronly, but I like mixing it with jeans and combat boots just in case, and it’s a nice light jacket for the season.

3 month road trip capsule thoughts

We are back from our 3 1/2 month road trip up the east coast of the USA from North Carolina, traveling across Canada, down the west coast and back home across the southern States  —  a total of over 16,000 miles in 105 days. I packed a lot of practical clothes, nothing really special because our plan included wild camping in our camper van with the occasional campground, lots of driving, exploring and hiking which can get dirty. I had some nicer clothes for the cities.

We absolutely adored Canada but fell head over heels IN LOVE with Newfoundland: the dramatic terrain and the friendly people. We visited old friends, made some new ones along the way and visited both our daughters, one in Cambridge and the other in LA.

If I had to do it again, I would expand my color selections, because I got really tired of wearing neutrals, blue and green. I would also add more feminine options - a floral blouse and a pretty dress. I started craving that early in the trip. At the last minute before we left I threw in a silky camisole with lace trim.  I did not feel good in the more masculine technical clothing I wore but the minute I added the camisole I felt like myself again. I need to find a way to feel more feminine in hiking gear! Or maybe all it takes is a pretty camisole. I also wished I had more shoes especially of the walking/hiking variety. For that long of a trip, I needed more options. I did not wear any of my graphic tees, but wore everything else.

I didn’t take a lot of outfit pics but am showing an outfit with a teal velvet jackets I ordered and had sent to my daughters house in LA, so it was nice to have something different after the first month.

If you want to see our entire trip you can find it here:

White boots outfit

Hi, I’m back from my 3 month camping trip (will post about my travel capsule later) and survived the holidays. Hope you all had a good season!

I’ve been wanting some white boots and found these bone colored combat boots with a chunky heel. They see to go well with light grey, bone, probably white but they seem a little precious to me because of the color. In other words, I’m afraid of getting them dirty.

Please tell me your thoughts about these and white boots in general?

Date night with Aqua and White Soft Pants

I’ve been wanting to try wide leg soft pants for a while and thought they would be the perfect comfortable addition to my summer wardrobe, so I ordered these from Boden.  The first pair came with the pattern unmatched so I returned for another pair after talking with customer service. The second pair matches better but not perfectly, but it’s good enough for me and much better than the first one.

My fear with them is that they would look shapeless, but after wearing them a few times I love how they feel.  Adding a Bardot neckline seemed to help balance the wideness of the pants and was nice and cool for a date night.

Z and V turquoise blouse

Excuse the glare, I took this at a bad time of the day.  This is the Zadig and Voltaire blouse that a few of us bought from the sale.  It feels wonderful, soft and light.  The deep V is nice for showing a cami underneath.  I’m a little on the fence because I normally am happier with solids but this pattern is so unusual and despite the volume in the torso it doesn’t look overly big to me. Love the design and bits of white in the pattern — it reminds me a little of the artist Peter Max.

As is my usual routine, I buy something and think about it for a while so I don’t make mistakes, try it on around the house with other clothes and build some outfits to try in Stylebook. Sometimes they work IRL and sometimes they don’t. I wore outfit #1 with white jeans and teal sandals to meet my mom for lunch Sunday, and today I’m wearing #8 with jeans. I could see it going with a lot of things in my closet for all seasons. Any other ideas?

1. With white jeans for summer
2.  Casual with light wash jeans
3.  With navy linen trousers
4. With jacket and boots for winter
5. Spring or Fall with a scarf
6. With teal jeans Spring or Fall
7.  With teal skirt
8. With jeans for summer

Theory Wool Blend trousers

Here are the Theory Ignera wool blend trousers from the Sale:  They run small so am very glad my size was not available and I had to size up!

The color is described as grey and burgundy but to me it is a grey background with chocolate brown in part of the plaid which I love because they will go great with my grey and brown snakeskin Chelsea boots. They will also look nice with burgundy and various pinks. The fabric is not heavy, crisp but not uncomfortable, and should hold its shape well.

I wore them today with sneakers, a teal tank and grey hoodie.

Jade green and Emerald

I am obsessed with versions of green this summer: jade, emerald, teal, aqua so had to share what I wore yesterday: white flares with emerald tank and jade green silky duster which reverses to leopard. The leopard is a bit too much for me but I like the flash of it as a surprise lining.
