My 25 item Spring Capsule

I’ve been enjoying developing capsules for the different seasons, and for Spring 2022, I’m focusing on 25 items. I really wanted it to be 22 but alas. At the last minute I also threw in my white bag that goes so well with my hair.

Limiting myself keeps me from getting overwhelmed with decision fatigue and I’m more creative with my outfits. I usually add a few new pieces each season but also incorporate some things that I haven’t been wearing to see if they deserve a place in my closet or if I should pass them on to someone else. This time it’s the lilac pink skirt.

It helps if most everything works together although sometimes it’s fun to throw a wild card in there. By the time summer rolls around I can regroup and come up with a new capsule by shopping my closet.

My neutrals are navy, denim, and white and my colors are various tints of magenta, pink and lilac.

5 Tops: 1 tank, 1 graphic tee, 1 blouse, 1 chambray shirt, 1 hoodie

4 Bottoms: 1 skirt 1 light wash jeans, 1 dark wash jeans, 1 white jeans (may need to add one more here)

1 dress

3 Third Pieces: 2 moto jackets, same chambray shirt

4 Shoes: 2 combat boots, 1 sneaker, 1 sandal

4 Bags: 1 tote, 3 shoulder bags

Accessories: 2 earrings, 2 bracelets, 1 scarf

I may add something else as time goes on since I have a Memorial to attend in May. This is the first time I’ve limited myself this much so wish me luck! Do you do seasonal capsules?

These pieces all have so much character it will be easy to come up with high impact outfits. I like items with a little extra “oomph” like these.

To answer your question: I usually discover, looking back, that I have been wearing a fairly tight capsule for a few weeks. They come together unintentionally, but are generally mix & match.

SF That sounds much more organic and less planning than my approach!  I do enjoy the planning part, but willing to change if its not working.

  • Cardiff girl replied 2 years ago

Really pretty colours,l love the lilac boots!

  • cat2 replied 2 years ago

I don’t do capsules; instead I make seasonal trends lists and that gets me to pull out what I have that is trending.

  • slim cat replied 2 years ago

    Gorgeous colors and great collection!
I'm still working on the concept of the seasonal capsules - currently looking for the right pieces in light green to add more spring feeling to my mostly blue, black and white pieces ( better yet some printed tops that include all of my colors or just steal your fab graphic tee  :)  ).

  • Lana replied 2 years ago

Slim cat, I love that graphic tee — it’s cut for women and I found it on Amazon.

Cat2, that is a brilliant idea!

Thank you Cardiff girl! I’m a little nervous about the lilac boots to be honest — they will be attention getting.

I want to do something similar but with a few more pieces.  In my mind you have counted your chambray shirt twice, so then you do achieve your magic number. :)  So many fab pieces here, standouts for me being the lilac boots and the blue hobo bag with zippers - both so cool and edgy.

I usually do some sort of capsule in the spring, but found that the weather is so changable that I need to allow for both cold and hot days and would allow subbing in similar items if needed, for example, cropped white pants for heavy white full length ones, a sleeveless boho top for one with long sleeves.  Espadrilles for booties in a similar color..  this will work for me.  The hardest part is limiting colors and neutrals as in spring I want to wear lots of pastels and brights, and all light neutrals.
Your color pallet is so spring- like and pretty.

  • Lana replied 2 years ago

Star, thank you, I recounted and it’s 25!  Oh well.

Joy, I’m already seeing a gap here today because it’s cold today and I need a warm coat.  The capsule is growing LOL. Subbing should definitely be allowed for the weather so I’m with you.

Thank you Lana for the Amazon info - the graphic tee shirt is still available ( and at least one more of the same style ). The question is in the fit though - I'm usually XS in tops unless it's junior collection. Is your tee shirt fits TTS or slightly on the smaller side? I may go for it ;) .

  • kkards replied 2 years ago

so are these the only items you will be wearing this spring? or is this the jumping off point, and all its need to go with these core items?
i'm asking because while i love the items that you've picked, and they are very cohesive, for me, it feels like you are light on shirts and tops. i'm only counting 4 (and a tank top). so not even enough to get thru a week without repeating.

  • Lana replied 2 years ago

Star if you do a capsule, I’d love to see it!

Slim cat, I usually wear a medium top but got the large in this tee because it runs small and is fitted. If you like things loose you could even go up 2 sizes. Here’s a pic of how it fits one size larger than my normal. I’m curious which other one you got too.

Kkards, definitely a beginning, but I tend to wear tops more than once as long as it’s not too hot. I suspect I will be subbing similar items such as another graphic tee or a long sleeve white top or sweater if needed.

  • Runcarla replied 2 years ago

Beautiful capsule, but I wonder if you have enough tops?  I ‘count wears’ and in any given month I rotate through 10-12 different tops.  (This is about half my total number) and 4-5 different bottoms.

The weather is fully ‘transitional’ at the moment and April is one of the most unpredictable months.  Today it is 0degC (freezing) overcast, and very windy, but tomorrow’s forecast is for 16degC (60dF!) and rain.

I have been working on a S/S capsule (May-August) which is almost complete.  33 items including 13 tops.  I would like to add a bag and a pair of sandals and bring the number to 35.

PS: I’m a fan of that colour you call rose-brown :-D

  • cat2 replied 2 years ago

Lana: How do those sneakers fit? Sneakers are often so clompy, those are really sleek.

  • The Cat replied 2 years ago

    Lovely colour combo!

  • rachylou replied 2 years ago

Super pretty! My question is, did you acquire these colours on purpose or did they just happen in your closet? :D

  • Angie replied 2 years ago

    Lovely! Orchid Fabness.

You are a knock-out in white!

You can add your signature greys, seafoams and murky blues to this too, if you like. No need to stick to 25 pieces for 3 months if your mood takes you somewhere else along the way :)

  • Lana replied 2 years ago

RunCarla, you’re right, I don’t have enough tops! This will definitely be a learning experience.  I think I will sub similar items — so if too cold for a graphic tee or it needs washing, I can wear another white top or sweater. Hopefully by the end I’ll know how many I need ideally.  Good idea to track wears.

Cat2, I’ll let you know when they get here, they are a new purchase. If they don’t work, I’ll go with old low top converse.  I was hoping for an upgrade.

    Thank you The Cat!

Rachylouits a little of both.  For example the lilac moto jacket is very old and I bought it on a whim but this year I added the lilac bag and boots to complement.  I’m trying to be more intentional about my purchases.

    Angie
you are so right!  This is just the beginning. I already added a navy cashmere sweater because it’s so cold today!

  • RobinF replied 2 years ago

Very nice pieces! I don't think they would last me a week! :) But I don't like to repeat outfits in a week, especially at work. Love the pink boots, very sleek and will suit your gritty glamour name!

  • Lana replied 2 years ago

RobinF, right now I’m loving lilac but after this I might hate it! LOL. I have a feeling I will be adding more items and some more variety.

  • Helena replied 2 years ago

This is a beautiful palette and such cohesive pieces. Beautifully done! I keep trying capsules but never stick them through :D

  • Style Fan replied 2 years ago

Your capsule is so pretty.  I don't do a planned capsule, but I have pieces that work well together.

  • Bijou replied 2 years ago

This is a beautiful capsule. I don't put together wardrobe capsules, but rather smaller collections of complements as I like wardrobe variety. This capsule would be a gorgeous travel capsule.

  • Jaime replied 2 years ago

Gorgeous capsule! The lilac combat boots drew my eye right away (in a good way!). I love the prettiness of the colors contrasted with the toughness of the items. I don't do capsules but, like Stag, there are definitely patterns to what I wear.

  • Sisi replied 2 years ago

Fab capsule! Interesting pieces and beautiful colours.
I do not do seasonal capsules but I like having a moderate/small number of clothes. This will be very interesting to follow.

  • Jonesy replied 2 years ago

Lovely springtime capsule! Very cohesive but in no way one note or limiting, and these colors look splendid with your hair and coloring.

  • Barbara Diane replied 2 years ago

This is the prettiest and most interesting capsule-so many memorable items and colors. And I think being flexible about it going in is great. That way you won’t feel trapped by it.

  • Staysfit replied 2 years ago

Nice color choices.  Do you have enough tops?  I like the variety of footwear and lilac combat boots! Definitely Gritty Glam! Fantastic!  Do you know what the writing means on the signs on your graphic tee?  I try to steer clear clothing with printed script I cannot decipher.

  • Lana replied 2 years ago

Staysfit, I definitely don’t have enough tops to make it 2 or 3 months, so I’m open to adding things as time goes on. I’m not completely sure about the characters but the tee says “Don’t Grow Up” at the bottom so I’m thinking it’s some version of that. I’m in a Japanese journal group — I should ask them.

Thank you Barbara, Jonesy, Helena, Stylefan and Sisi, I think I enjoy the planning part more than the actual implementation.

Jaime, I’m a little nervous about those boots being too noticeable, but I’m going for it.

Bijou, you’re right it would be a great travel capsule. I did something similar for a month long trip to Europe with my daughters where we each only had one carryon.  By the end I was so sick of those clothes!  Hah

  • replied 2 years ago

Beautiful capsule! I've been pretty much only wearing neutrals, dark greens, and burgundy lately. Makes life easier!

  • Lana replied 2 years ago

Suntiger, I did the same in Winter. I feel like I’m ready for some color.

  • Indigoprint replied 2 years ago

I will be anxious to see you style that free people denim shirt. I have it in a shopping cart someplace..

  • Lana replied 2 years ago

Indigoprint there’s a funny story about that shirt. I ordered a small and an extra small and it arrived from FED EX on a day I was mailing some returns. Somehow it got mailed AT THE US POST OFFICE with the rest of the packages. I did find out that Fed Ex picks up daily from the USPS for this very reason, but it never came back to me.

Nordstrom was nice enough to refund my order and I ordered the last Small only to have it cancelled. After stalking it, another small showed up and I grabbed it. I’ll let you know if it makes it here! :)

  • Jenni NZ replied 2 years ago

It’s very pretty. I don’t do this, I keep everything out all year since I have a large walk-in wardrobe space, I just change which tops or pants or dresses or shoes are at the front or the top of each section. Thinking about numbers though, I have 70 items of clothing for autumn/winter/spring so it’s the equivalent of about 23 items per season, before I even consider shoes or accessories. I definitely would need a higher number than your 25 or I think I would be frustrated and possibly not be able to keep up with laundering!

  • SarahD8 replied 2 years ago

This is a gorgeous capsule, Lana. I appreciate how it is so colorful -- you're showing how a minimal capsule doesn't have to rely just on neutrals.

I like the idea of your experiment, too. I've been contemplating something similar -- pulling back to a very small, tight collection as a clarifying exercise and a starting point for experimentation. Please keep us posted how this goes for you! I am taking notes.
